Wally May
My artnazi first year drawing teacher
Well, I finally got to art school. And this is what they gave me for a first year drawing art teacher: a nazi. He was a sculptor who had no notion of the beauty of the handmade mark.
Drawing isn’t real, he said.
Drawing to him was for making notes on ‘what is real’ for the purpose of 3 dimensional art. Having come to art school for the credential to aid future showing and teaching, I already knew how to draw and paint, taught by an expert for 8 years. I couldn’t believe they allowed this guy in front of students to spout his realist philosophy. No one left the course knowing how to draw. A lot of really disappointed kids.
Hitler as it turned out and the ultra conservative board of directors of the art school, shared his philosophy.
He was like the soup nazi, to be endured, to get what you want.
I saw a couple of his exhibitions. Mostly large erect penis like structures. As a short man, he must have been compensating.
He regurgitated the ‘drawing on the right side of the brain’ book, the irony of the title was not lost on me. I mean basically I could have got the info by buying a popular art book.
His crits were public shame sessions that drove students to a therapist. I mean he was really awful. In every possible way.
